I’ve been reviewing software for PCMag since 2008, and I still get a kick of seeing what's new in video and photo editing software, and how operating systems change over time. PC hardware is nice, but it’s not much use without innovative software. Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade to users of Windows 7 and 8.1 starting July 29. It's encouraging that not only is Microsoft working furiously on polishing its new Windows 10 operating system, but also its core apps that will be available for users of the new operating system. Pivot table lovers, however, will need to upgrade to the full Office 365. Excel Mobile still includes a wealth of formulas to apply, including statistical, financial, logical, database, and engineering formulas. For example, they support revisions and commenting. Though the apps are stripped-down, mobile versions of their Office 365 counterparts, they include most of the commonly needed functionality of the bigger apps. Like Web-based productivity apps, these mobile apps save your work automatically as you make changes, and sharing a document with other users online is a simple matter of tapping a share button, specifying whether the recipient should be able to edit it, and including an optional message. It also means any Office files you've saved to OneDrive (or the previously named SkyDrive), will be immediately available to you from the File panel in the apps. It's the default save target, so that if you start editing a document, spreadsheet, or presentation on a phone (be it an iPhone, an Android, or Windows Phone, all of which have Mobile Office apps available), you can pick up where you left off on your Windows 10 PC. Like the full Office 365 apps, these mobile versions are tightly connected with OneDrive cloud storage. Oddly, the first is called Outlook Mail on phones running Windows 10, but just Mail on PCs running the new OS.

If you update them today, however, you might notice that they've ditched the "preview" part.Īdditionally, Windows 10 will come with touch-friendly versions of Outlook and OneNote pre-installed. But probably less well known is that the company is also giving away a pared-down, touch-friendly version of its golden goose: Microsoft Office.Īvailable in the Windows Store (Microsoft's app store) as Word Mobile Preview, Excel Mobile Preview, and PowerPoint Mobile Preview, the apps are just what they sound like.
